Presented in an art center that originally served as a market hall, Matières premières features a series of installations that evoke Geneva’s role in the international trading of raw materials. Geneva holds the top global position in the trade of grains, oilseeds, and rice, and is also the leading European city for the trade of sugar, oil, and cotton. While large heaps of salt, earth, and sand are suspended in the space, a series of tools, reduced to just their handles, are displayed against one of the exhibition walls.
