ARCHITECTURE OF AN AUTONOMY
Séverin Guelpa est artiste et curateur. Il vit et travaille depuis Genève (1974).
Séverin Guelpa puise son inspiration dans la matière première du territoire dont il révèle les forces, les mouvements et les points de fracture. Son travail associe matériaux bruts, rebus industriels et procédés de construction pour traduire les états d’un monde en profond bouleversement. Il modifie, pèse, transforme ou déplace alors les matières premières dans de grandes installations qui évoquent les liens complexes entre action humaine d’une part et forme de résilience naturelle de l’autre, cherchant à questionner les changements radicaux qui attendent notre société.
Avec MATZA qu’il fonde en 2014, Séverin Guelpa investit différentes régions du monde, territoires extrêmes ou zones urbaines en mouvement dans lesquels il réunit artistes, experts et architectes. L’expérience des régions explorées et les savoir-faire des gens qui y vivent nourrissent alors une réflexion sur notre capacité d’adaptation et les formes de développement et d’émancipation qui naissent au contact de la nature. L’apprentissage par le lieu devient pour lui un moyen d’aborder les questions écologiques, économiques ou sociales d’aujourd’hui et de se saisir des grands bouleversements actuels.
Après le désert de Mojave (2014-2017), le glacier d’Aletsch (2016-2018), les iles de Kerkennah en Tunisie (2017) et plusieurs villes suisses, il intervient avec MATZA en Colombie (Medellin et Cúcuta) et au Kenya (Nairobi) entre 2022 et 2023. Il travaille actuellement entre le désert de Mojave (Californie), les Alpes suisses et le Salar de Atacama (Chili). En 2024, il crée le studio MATZA qui œuvre désormais comme outil d’expérimentation ou de production ponctuel.
Le travail de Séverin Guelpa a récemment été présenté à la galerie BBAX à Los Angeles (2021), au centre d’art d’Arbon en Suisse (2021), au centre d’art PARQUE CULTURAL de Valparaiso au Chili (2021) et au LA Artshow de Los Angeles (2022).
Après une licence en Sciences politiques (Université de Genève), Séverin Guelpa obtient un master en arts visuels de la HEAD (Haute Ecole d’Arts et de Design – Genève). Il intervient régulièrement au sein d’Écoles d’art, d’architecture ou d’universités en Suisse et à l’étranger pour présenter son travail ou conduire des ateliers.
Séverin Guelpa is an artist and curator, born in 1974, who lives and works in Geneva.
Drawing inspiration from the raw materials of the landscapes he explores, Guelpa reveals the forces, movements, and fractures that shape them. His work combines raw materials, industrial waste, and construction techniques to express the states of a world undergoing profound transformation. Through large-scale installations, he manipulates, weighs, transforms, or relocates these materials, evoking the complex interplay between human intervention and natural resilience, while questioning the radical changes that lie ahead for society.
In 2014, Guelpa founded MATZA, a platform that engages with various regions worldwide, including extreme environments and dynamic urban zones. Collaborating with artists, experts, and architects, these interventions are shaped by the local expertise and experiences of those living in the explored areas, fostering reflection on human adaptability and the forms of development and emancipation that emerge from our relationship with nature. For Guelpa, learning through place becomes a method for addressing contemporary ecological, economic, and social challenges, responding to the significant upheavals of our time.
After projects in the Mojave Desert (2014–2017), the Aletsch Glacier (2016–2018), the Kerkennah Islands in Tunisia (2017), and several Swiss cities, MATZA has recently expanded to Colombia (Medellín and Cúcuta) and Kenya (Nairobi) between 2022 and 2023. Currently, Guelpa is working across the Mojave Desert (California), the Swiss Alps, and the Salar de Atacama (Chile). In 2024, he launched the MATZA Studio, which now operates as a tool for experimental and occasional production.
Guelpa’s recent exhibitions include the BBAX Gallery in Los Angeles (2021), the Arbon Art Center in Switzerland (2021), the Parque Cultural Art Center in Valparaiso, Chile (2021), and the LA Art Show in Los Angeles (2022).
After obtaining a degree in Political Science from the University of Geneva, Guelpa earned a Master’s in Visual Arts from HEAD (Geneva University of Art and Design). He frequently lectures and conducts workshops in art, architecture, and universities in Switzerland and internationally.
