ARCHITECTURE OF AN AUTONOMY
Séverin Guelpa est artiste et curateur. Il vit et travaille depuis Genève (1974).
S’inspirant des régions du monde qu’il explore et des ressources qui s’y trouvent, le travail de Séverin Guelpa aborde des questions d’identité, de culture, de temps ou encore d’émancipation. Ses architectures, comme ses sculptures, vidéos et photographies parlent ou se travaillent à partir de matières premières, pierres, éléments de construction ou matériaux de récupération qu’il extrait, assemble ou met en tension pour parler de notre rapport au monde et aux ressources dont nous dépendons. Il s’inspire et travaille généralement à partir de sites menacés, le plus souvent au sein de régions désertiques, en cherchant dans la singularité de ces lieux et les savoirs des gens qui y vivent les lignes de force de son travail.
Avec MATZA qu’il fonde en 2014 et dont il est curateur, Séverin Guelpa investit parallèlement à travers le monde, territoires extrêmes ou zones urbaines emblématiques dans lesquels il réunit artistes, experts, architectes et habitants. L’expérience des régions explorées nourrit alors un travail sur notre capacité d’adaptation et les formes d’intelligence collective qui naissent dans ces territoires. Après le désert de Mojave (2014-2017), le glacier d’Aletsch (2016-2018), les iles de Kerkennah (2017) et plusieurs villes suisses, il co-dirige aujourd’hui le projet MATZA Edgelands qui a lieu dans 7 villes différentes à travers le monde.
Après une licence en Sciences politiques (Université de Genève), Séverin Guelpa obtient un master en arts visuels de la HEAD (Haute Ecole d’Arts et de Design – Genève).
Séverin Guelpa is an artist and curator. He lives and works from Geneva (1974).
Inspired by the regions of the world he explores and their resources, Séverin Guelpa’s work addresses questions of identity, culture, time and emancipation. His architectures, like his sculptures, videos and photographs, combine raw materials, construction elements and salvaged materials, which he assembles, weighs and tensions to speak of our relationship with the world and its resources. He generally draws his inspiration and work from marginal sites, most often in desert regions, looking to the singularity of these places and the knowledge of the people who live there for the main thrust of his work.
With MATZA, which he founded in 2014 and of which he is curator, Séverin Guelpa invests in parallel across the world, extreme territories or emblematic urban areas in which he brings together artists, experts, architects and inhabitants. The experience of the regions explored then feeds into work on our ability to adapt and the forms of collective intelligence that emerge in these territories. After the Mojave Desert (2014-2017), the Aletsch Glacier (2016-2018), the Kerkennah Islands (2017) and several Swiss cities, he is now co-directing the MATZA Edgelands project, which is taking place in 7 different cities around the world.
After graduating in Political Science from the University of Geneva, Séverin Guelpa obtained a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from HEAD (Haute Ecole d’Arts et de Design – Geneva).
