MATZA – ART, LAND USE AND DEMOCRACY
MATZA est un manifeste artistique fondé en 2014 par l’artiste suisse Séverin Guelpa qui repose sur la capacité d’une communauté à se fédérer et inventer ses propres outils d’émancipation.
A travers MATZA, Séverin Guelpa initie des projets artistiques, collectifs ou individuels, qui s’articulent autour d’investigations du territoire et d’enjeux environnementaux ou sociaux. Plusieurs sites à travers le monde ont été investis qui ont ponctuellement réuni des communautés d’artistes, d’architectes et de scientifiques pour travailler sur des questions environnementales comme la sécheresse, la fonte des glaciers ou l’appauvrissement des ressources de la mer. A ce jour, MATZA est intervenu dans le désert de Mojave aux Etats-unis (MATZA Amboy, 2014–2017)), sur le glacier d’Aletsch en Suisse (MATZA Aletsch, 2015–2018), aux îles de Kerkennah en Tunisie (MATZA Kerkennah, 2017) et sur différents sites urbains en Suisse (MATZA Meyrin, 2019 et MATZA Lausanne, 2021). MATZA travaille aujourd’hui en collaboration avec le Edgelands Institute sur un projet de 4 ans à travers sept villes du monde. Les premières éditions ont eu lieu à Medellin et Cucuta en Colombie (2022) et seront suivies de Nairobi, Genève, Chicago, Singapour et Beyrouth.
En se confrontant à des régions du monde extrêmes ou en transition et en apprenant des populations qui y vivent, MATZA cherche par l’expérimentation collective à repenser notre relation à la nature et questionner le futur de notre société, par le biais de l’art essentiellement.
MATZA is an artistic manifesto founded in 2014 by Séverin Guelpa, which is based on the capacity of a community to come together and to invent the tools of its own emancipation.
Through MATZA, Séverin Guelpa initiates artistic projects, both collective and individual, which involve an exploration of land use, and environmental or social issues. Different sites have been adopted around the world that bring together communities of artists and scientists to work on concrete problems that face the places in question. To date, MATZA has worked in the Mojave Desert in the United States (MATZA Amboy, 2014-2017), on the Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland (MATZA Aletsch, 2015-2018), on the Kerkennah Islands in Tunisia (MATZA Kerkennah, 2017), and on various urban sites in Switzerland (MATZA Meyrin, 2019 and MATZA Lausanne, 2021). MATZA is now working in collaboration with the Edgelands Institute on a 4-year project across seven cities around the world. By confronting extreme regions of the world or territories with important ecological, political or economic concerns, MATZA seeks, through collective experimentation, to imagine solutions that are relevant to those regions, mainly through art.
