VIVRE LE TEMPS DES GRANDS BOULEVERSEMENTS
Nous traversons une période bouleversée par une succession de crises politiques, sociales, économiques et climatiques. Dans la complexité d’analyse et de compréhension de ces profondes transformations planétaires, la crise sanitaire du Covid est venue encore rajouter une épaisseur d’incertitude et de doute dans le sentiment général de n’avoir désormais plus d’emprise ni sur l’avenir ni sur son environnement. En Suisse comme ailleurs, la population à la recherche de repères exprime un besoin fort de reconnection à la nature en même temps que les besoins de nouvelles énergies se font ressentir.
We are going through a period of upheaval due to a succession of political, social, economic and climatic crises. In the complexity of analyzing and understanding these profound planetary transformations, the Covid health crisis has added a layer of uncertainty and doubt to the general feeling that we no longer have control over the future or our environment. In Switzerland as elsewhere, the population in search of landmarks expresses a strong need for reconnection with nature at the same time as the need for new energies is felt.
Tremblement/Trembling/Erschütterung, september 2021
Tremblement/Trembling/Erschütterung est un travail de Séverin Guelpa qui a démarré en 2020. Alors que le Covid provoque l’annulation de la plupart des expositions en Suisse, l’artiste et les architectes Kunik de Morsier. partent sur les routes de Suisse à la découverte de sites, naturels, bâtis ou symboliques qui incarnent pour eux les grands chamboulements actuels. Projet de géothermie profonde contesté dans le Jura, chantier de conduites forcées en Valais, stand de tir à Zurich où l’UDC fête son raout annuel ou encore village menacé d’évacuation dans les Grisons, autant de situations qui interrogent à leur manière la place croissante du risque et de l’imprévisibilité dans le monde d’aujourd’hui.
En 2021 et 2022, Séverin Guelpa réalise De profundis terrae qui filme les entrailles de la terre à travers différents sites en Suisse, laboratoire scientifique de l’ETH dans le Tessin, forage du deuxième tube du Gothard à Goeschenen ou encore des mines abandonnées dans les Alpes.
Les étapes suivantes de Tremblement vont s’intéresser aux infrastructures hydrauliques ainsi qu’aux glaciers que l’artiste filme de l’intérieur aux côtés de spéléologues. Au printemps 2024, la dernière partie du projet est prévue autour du village de Brienz dans les Alpes grisonnes, village évacué en 2023 suite à la menace d’effondrement d’un pan de la montagne qui surplombe le village.
Pour Tremblement/Erschütterung, Séverin Guelpa s’entoure d’experts et s’inspire notamment des tests scientifiques pratiqués sur le terrain ou en laboratoire pour s’intéresser aux frontières entre une nature que nous pensons sous contrôle et la place que nous sommes capables d’accorder au doute et à l’imprévisiblité dans notre rapport au monde.
Tremblement/Trembling/Erschütterung is a project by Séverin Guelpa that began in 2020. With Covid causing the cancellation of most exhibitions in Switzerland, the artist and architects Kunik de Morsier. set out on the roads of Switzerland to discover sites – natural, built or symbolic – which they see as embodying today’s major upheavals. From a disputed deep geothermal project in the Jura region to the Valais penstock that supplies the country with energy, from a shooting range in Zurich where the SVP celebrates its annual rally to a village threatened with evacuation in the Grisons region, these are all situations that, in their own way, question the growing role of risk and unpredictability in today’s world.
In 2022, Séverin Guelpa directed De profundis terrae, filming the bowels of the earth at various sites in Switzerland, including the ETH scientific laboratory in Ticino, the drilling of the second Gotthard tube at Goeschenen and abandoned mines in the Alps.
The next stages of Tremblement will focus on hydraulic infrastructures and glaciers, which the artist will film from the inside alongside speleologists. In the spring of 2024, the final part of the project will focus on the village of Brienz in the Graubunden Alps, which was evacuated in 2023 when a section of the mountain overlooking the village collapsed.
For Tremblement/Erschütterung, Séverin Guelpa has enlisted the help of experts and drawn inspiration from scientific field and laboratory tests to explore the boundaries between a nature we think we have under control and the place we are capable of giving to doubt and unpredictability.
