”Nous traversons une période bouleversée par les crises politiques, sanitaires, économiques ou encore climatiques. Face à l’accélération de ces événements, nous réalisons ne plus avoir d’emprise ni sur notre environnement ni sur le cours des choses. Les certitudes qui reposaient jusque-là sur une société développée et capable de maitriser ce qui l’entoure s’effritent, nous plongeant dans un monde aux repères ébranlés en proie à de profonds doutes. En Suisse comme ailleurs, la recherche de nouveaux repères s’exprime par un besoin fort de reconnection à la nature”. Ce projet s’inscrit dans cette dynamique pour s’intéresser aux TREMBLEMENTs du territoire et à ce qu’ils révèlent de notre société.

The certainties of a developed society capable of mastering its surroundings are crumbling, plunging us into a world of shaken landmarks and profound doubts. In Switzerland, as elsewhere, the search for new points of reference is expressed by a strong need to reconnect with nature”. This project is part of this dynamic, focusing on the TREMBLINGs of the land and what they reveal about our society.
Le projet Tremblement/Trembling/Erschütterung a démarré en 2020. Alors que le Covid provoque l’annulation de la plupart des expositions en Suisse, l’artiste et les architectes Kunik de Morsier. partent sur les routes de Suisse à la découverte de sites, naturels, bâtis ou symboliques qui incarnent pour eux les grands chamboulements actuels. Projet de géothermie profonde contesté dans le Jura, chantier de conduites forcées en Valais, stand de tir à Zurich où l’UDC fête son raout annuel ou encore village menacé d’évacuation dans les Grisons, autant de situations qui interrogent à leur manière la place croissante du risque et de l’imprévisibilité dans le monde d’aujourd’hui.
En 2021 et 2022, Séverin Guelpa réalise De profundis terrae, une installation vidéo qui nous plonge dans les entrailles de la terre à travers différents sites en Suisse, laboratoire scientifique, forage de tunnel, infrastructure hydroélectrique ou encore mine abandonnée dans les Alpes.
En 2023 et 2024, Guelpa descend dans les entrailles des glaciers qu’il filme de l’intérieur aux côtés de spéléologues. En 2024, il retourne notamment dans le village de Brienz dans les Alpes grisonnes, village plusieurs fois évacué depuis 2023 suite à l’effondrement d’un pan de la montagne qui surplombe le village.
A l’occasion de Tremblement/Erschütterung, Séverin Guelpa s’entoure d’experts et s’inspire des tests scientifiques pratiqués sur le terrain ou en laboratoire pour s’intéresser aux frontières entre une nature que nous pensions sous contrôle et la place que nous sommes capables d’accorder au doute et à l’imprévisibilité dans notre vision moderne du monde.
Ce travail est au centre de plusieurs expositions en Suisse et à l’étranger et fera l’objet d’un livre publié fin 2025 par la curatrice Dorothea Strauss aux Editions Scheidegger & Spiess à Zurich.
The Tremblement/Trembling/Erschütterung project began in 2020. With Covid causing the cancellation of most exhibitions in Switzerland, artist and architects Kunik de Morsier. set out on the roads of Switzerland to discover sites – natural, built or symbolic – which they see as embodying today’s major upheavals. A disputed deep geothermal energy project in the Jura, a penstock construction site in the Valais, a shooting range in Zurich where the SVP is celebrating its annual rally, or a village threatened with evacuation in the Grisons: these are all situations which, in their own way, question the growing role of risk and unpredictability in today’s world.
In 2021 and 2022, Séverin Guelpa will create De profundis terrae, a video installation that plunges us into the bowels of the earth at various sites in Switzerland, including scientific laboratories, tunnels, hydroelectric infrastructure and abandoned mines in the Alps.
In 2023 and 2024, Guelpa descends into the bowels of glaciers, filming them from the inside alongside speleologists. In 2024, he returned to the village of Brienz in the Grisons Alps, which had been evacuated several times since 2023 after a section of the mountain overlooking the village collapsed.
For Tremblement/Erschütterung, Séverin Guelpa enlists the help of experts and draws on scientific field and laboratory tests to explore the boundaries between a nature we thought we had under control and the place we are able to give to doubt and unpredictability in our modern worldview.
This work is the focus of several exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad, and will be the subject of a book published at the end of 2025 by curator Dorothea Strauss and Editions Scheidegger & Spiess in Zurich.
