Dans une époque marquée par les bouleversements climatiques, l’épuisement des ressources et l’accélération des flux, Séverin Guelpa façonne une œuvre engagée et sensorielle, où le paysage devient matière, et la matière, langage.
Séverin Guelpa est un artiste visuel contemporain. Il vit et travaille à Genève (né en 1974).
Le travail de Séverin Guelpa s’ancre dans les territoires fragiles, exposés, menacés – ces zones du globe où les tensions entre nature, ressources, économie et survie humaine sont les plus palpables. Depuis plusieurs années, il arpente déserts, zones arides, espaces industriels ou géographies en transition, pour y extraire une forme de vérité physique et poétique.
Sa démarche repose sur l’immersion, souvent dans le cadre de résidences longues ou d’expéditions, où l’artiste s’installe, observe, prélève, documente. À la croisée du geste plastique et du travail de terrain, Séverin Guelpa explore la complexité d’un territoire à travers l’image (vidéo ou photographie), la prise de son, mais aussi la collecte de matières premières (pierre, terre, minerais, eau, métal) qui seront ensuite réutilisées dans ses installations. Chaque œuvre devient ainsi empreinte directe du lieu, transformation de ses forces telluriques en langage artistique.
À travers ses projets, il interroge les rapports entre nature et culture, les formes de résistance et d’adaptation, les tensions entre fragilité et puissance. En donnant corps à la matière et voix aux silences, il construit des environnements sensibles où se croisent la sculpture, l’installation, l’architecture et le film immersif. Son travail invite à ressentir le monde plus qu’à le représenter, en proposant des expériences physiques, souvent à grande échelle, dans lesquelles le spectateur est amené à se déplacer, écouter, habiter.
Après des projets dans le désert du Mojave (2014–2017), sur le glacier d’Aletsch (2016–2018), sur les îles Kerkennah en Tunisie (2017) et dans plusieurs villes suisses, MATZA – la plateforme collective qu’il a fondée – s’est récemment déployée en Colombie (Medellín et Cúcuta) et au Kenya (Nairobi) entre 2022 et 2023. Guelpa travaille actuellement entre le désert du Mojave (Californie), les Alpes suisses et le Salar d’Atacama (Chili), poursuivant une réflexion sur les territoires extrêmes et les ressources.
Depuis 2014, Séverin Guelpa a été invité à participer à de nombreuses expositions, biennales et événements prestigieux à travers le monde. Il a notamment exposé au Palais de Tokyo à Paris, au Museu do Amanhã à Rio de Janeiro, et a participé à des biennales internationales telles que celles de Mongolie, d’Athènes ou encore de Larnaca à Chypre. Ces invitations témoignent de la reconnaissance d’un travail engagé, qui place la matière et le territoire au cœur d’une réflexion artistique contemporaine.
Après une formation en sciences politiques, Séverin Guelpa a obtenu un master en arts visuels à la HEAD – Genève. Il a depuis été invité à présenter son travail, à donner conférences et workshops dans de nombreuses institutions, universités et écoles d’art, en Suisse comme à l’international.

WORKING WITH THE MATTER OF THE WORLD
In an age marked by ecological upheaval, resource exhaustion, and accelerated global flows, Séverin Guelpa creates a sensory and politically engaged body of work, where landscape becomes material, and matter becomes language.
Séverin Guelpa is a contemporary visual artist. He lives and works in Geneva, Switzerland (born in 1974).
The work of Séverin Guelpa is rooted in fragile, exposed, and threatened territories—places where tensions between nature, resources, economy, and human survival are most visible. For several years, he has explored deserts, arid zones, industrial landscapes, and transitional geographies to extract a form of physical and poetic truth.
His approach is based on immersion, often in the context of long-term residencies or expeditions, during which he observes, collects, documents, and inhabits the terrain. At the intersection of sculpture, image-making, and fieldwork, Séverin Guelpa investigates the complexity of each environment through video, sound recordings, and the collection of raw materials—stone, earth, minerals, water, metal—which he later integrates into his installations. Each work becomes a direct imprint of the site, a transformation of its geological and social forces into artistic language.
Through his practice, Guelpa examines the fragile relationship between nature and culture, resilience and collapse, resource and territory. By giving form to matter and voice to silence, he constructs sensitive environments where installation, sculpture, architecture, and immersive video converge. His work invites the viewer to feel the world rather than represent it—through physical, often large-scale experiences that engage the senses and the body.
After projects in the Mojave Desert (2014–2017), the Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland (2016–2018), the Kerkennah Islands in Tunisia (2017), and several Swiss cities, the collective platform he founded, MATZA, expanded recently to Colombia (Medellín and Cúcuta) and Kenya (Nairobi) between 2022 and 2023. Guelpa is currently working across the Mojave Desert (California), the Swiss Alps, and the Salar de Atacama (Chile), continuing his research into extreme geographies and raw material economies.
Since 2014, Séverin Guelpa has been invited to take part in numerous exhibitions, biennials, and major international art events. He has shown his work at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, at the Museu do Amanhã in Rio de Janeiro, and participated in major biennials such as those of Mongolia, Athens, and Larnaca (Cyprus). These invitations reflect the growing recognition of a committed practice that places territory and raw material at the heart of contemporary artistic research.
After earning a degree in Political Science, Séverin Guelpa completed a Master’s in Visual Arts at HEAD – Geneva. He has since been invited to present his work and lead workshops and lectures at numerous institutions, universities, and art schools in Switzerland and internationally.
